Volunteer Opportunity
Book Buddies is a read-aloud program that emphasizes the pleasure of reading. It is designed for children ages pre-school through elementary. The intent of the program is to: expose children to a variety of literature available at the library; offer an inviting atmosphere for children through one-on-one or small group interaction; provide literacy enrichment; promote reading as fun and entertaining.
Examples of Duties
Under supervision of the Youth Services Librarian or the Branch Librarian, choose and present age-appropriate books. Prepare area for reading by placing sign in visible area; prepare and use materials such as flannel board stories and puppets. Invite children to join story session and explain program to parents as needed.Qualifications and Skills
Due to the drop-in nature of the program, Book Buddies volunteers need to be very flexible and adaptable to the number and age-range of participants.
Volunteer should have prior experience working with children and project a warm, expressive manner.
Ability to prepare and incorporate materials which enrich the read-aloud sessions is highly desirable.
Must be willing to explain the program to parents and invite children to participate in the read-aloud session.
Completion of a six-hour training workshop is required.
Must be sixteen years of age or above.
Working Conditions
Volunteers may need to move tables or chairs to provide reading space; some craft materials may be prepared at home/
Time Commitment
Requires a six month, two hour per week commitment.
